What Is AI, Really? A Plain-English Explanation

At its core, artificial intelligence is software that learns patterns from huge amounts of examples, then uses those patterns to make predictions about new situations it hasn't seen before.

Do that billions of times, across a huge range of topics, and the model gets remarkably good at producing text that reads like a knowledgeable person wrote it. It isn't "thinking" the way you do — it's recognizing patterns in language at a massive scale.

Once you understand that AI is pattern-matching, not genuine understanding, two things click into place. First, it explains why AI can sound confident while being completely wrong — it's predicting plausible-sounding text, not verifying facts against reality.

Second, it explains why being specific in what you ask for gets you better results: you're giving the pattern-matcher more context to work with, narrowing down which patterns actually apply.
