AI Image Generation Explained: How to Create Images with AI

AI image models are trained on enormous numbers of image-and-caption pairs, learning the relationship between words and visual concepts. When you type a prompt, the model generates a brand-new image matching that description — it isn't searching for or editing an existing photo, it's creating pixels from scratch based on the patterns it learned.

Image prompts reward the same specificity as text prompts, just visually: subject, setting, art style, lighting, and mood, in that rough order, tend to produce the most controllable results. "A cat" gives you something generic and unpredictable. "A fluffy orange cat sitting on a sunlit windowsill, soft natural lighting, photorealistic" gives the model something concrete to work with.

Naming a specific style — watercolor, 3D render, anime, photorealistic, flat vector illustration — is one of the highest-leverage additions to any image prompt, since it instantly narrows the visual space the model draws from. For consistent characters across multiple images (useful for a story or a comic), describing the character's specific, distinctive features in every prompt, rather than assuming the model remembers, keeps them recognizably the same.

Generating images of real, identifiable people without consent, or content designed to deceive, are real ethical and often legal lines worth understanding before you run into them by accident — a genuinely useful habit is treating AI-generated images of people or events the way you'd treat any other image you didn't personally take: worth a second thought before you use or share it.
